Post-Conference Workshop - 29 January 2010 (0900-1300)
Modelling Techniques for Detecting Leakage Hotspots and Reducing Carbon Footprint
Workshop Host: Zheng Yi Wu, Research Director, Applied Research Group, Bentley Systems
Leakage represents a major portion of water loss or non-revenue water (NRW) in water distribution networks around the world. Over the last decade leakage and leak detection has been the focus of a significant amount of research – a number of techniques have been developed, but few are cost-effective for rapidly pin-pointing leakage hotspots.
When pumping is used to deliver water – to ensure that customers receive adequate pressure - leakage is an energy loss that results in unnecessary carbon dioxide emission or an increased carbon footprint. There is no doubt that the extra carbon emission contributes to global climate change. This contribution needs to be minimized.
An award-winning optimization technology has been developed for achieving cost-effective leakage detection by leveraging the well-established hydraulic model. With an improved hydraulic model leakage can be effectively simulated as pressure dependent demand - the greater the pressure, the greater the leakage.
This workshop will present this innovative modeling technology - and a number of successful case studies that have helped regulated water utilities and government agencies to detect leakage hotspots. They demonstrate how energy has been saved, the carbon footprint reduced, and climate change mitigated, in addition to other direct benefits of improving water network infrastructure.
Topics and speakers include:
- Optimization Methods and Modelling Tools for Leakage Detection: Zheng Yi Wu, Research Director, Bentley Systems, Incorporated, USA.
- Latest Progress on Leakage Detection and Model Calibration, Paul Sage, Managing Director, WITSConsult Limited, UK.

Zheng Yi Wu is a research director for Bentley systems, based in Watertown, Connecticut, USA. His current responsibility is to undertake research projects for optimizing lifecycle performance of infrastructure assets. Over last 20 years, he has been involved in applied research, engineering consulting and software development, published dozens of technical papers, received several patents from USA patent office, a few awards from AWWA, IWA and India Waterworks Association. Most of his research outcomes have evolved into commercial software products and used by engineers around the world.
